First of all: Yes, we know she's officially Deborah Gibson now, but for anybody who grew up with "Shake Your Love" and "Out of the Blue," she'll always be Debbie. Today is her 40th birthday, so be sure to save her the big slice of cake and let her take a few extra swings at the pinata.

Gibson broke onto the pop scene just before her 17th birthday when she dropped her debut album Out of the Blue in 1987. Though most teenage pop sensations are the product of an army of producers, songwriters and stylists, Gibson was a completely self-made star who wrote, produced and arranged all of the songs on her debut. The album spawned a cavalcade of hit singles, including "Only in My Dreams," the aforementioned "Shake Your Love" and the title track. Those songs drove Out of the Blue to sales of three million in the U.S. and over eight million worldwide.

Following a hugely successful world tour, Gibson struck again with Electric Youth in 1989. That album scored another set of giant singles, including the title track and "Lost in Your Eyes." Though her subsequent albums started to fade in the United States, she continued to have international success (especially in the U.K. and Japan). She continued to release albums throughout the '90s while she made her way into acting. She put together an excellent theater career, starring in a beloved London production of "Grease" and then coming back to the stages to star in shows like "Beauty and the Beast," "Gypsy" and "Chicago." Lately, she has become something of a cult star in sci-fi movies, such as last year's "Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus" and the forthcoming "Mega Python vs. Gatoroid" (which co-stars former rival Tiffany, she of "I Think We're Alone Now" fame).

Gibson's biggest hit was "Foolish Beat," which came from Out of the Blue and peaked at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. She still holds the record for being the youngest star to ever write, produce and perform a chart-topping song. Gibson was an MTV staple in the '80s, and the clip for "Foolish Beat" is one of the biggest in the channel's history.

FOUNTAIN OF 'YOUTH': An artist who spent a hefty portion of her teens in the Billboard Hot 100's top 40 celebrates her 40th birthday today.

Deborah Gibson was born Aug. 31, 1970 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Billed as Debbie Gibson, the pop singer-songwriter notched nine top 40 Hot 100 hits on Atlantic Records between 1987 and 1991.

Gibson's debut album, "Out of the Blue," generated four Hot 100 top 10s, including the No. 1 "Foolish Beat" in 1988. Not yet 18 when the song reached the summit, Gibson remains the youngest female artist to write, produce and perform a Hot 100 chart-topper.

Gibson's second album, "Electric Youth," reigned for five weeks atop the Billboard 200 in 1989 and featured her second Hot 100 leader, "Lost in Your Eyes."

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Gibson's first two albums have been certified triple- and double-Platinum, respectively. Her third set, "Anything Is Possible," earned a Gold certification.

Gibson, who added Broadway credits to her resume beginning in 1992, has most recently made headlines with the announcement that she has teamed with fellow former teen singing star Tiffany to film the upcoming Syfy original movie, "Mega Python vs. Gatoroid" (also starring Mickey Dolenz) and for headlining Cirque Dreams' "Jungle Fantasy" stage production.

"Thank U 4 all the bday wishes! 40 feels FABULOUS!," Gibson Tweeted earlier today. "I'm giggling cuz the number doesn't compute. I feel ETERNALLY ELECTRIC."

On her 40th birthday, Chart Beat looks at Gibson's nine Hot 100 top 40 hits to-date.

Debbie Gibson Turns 40

DEBBIE GIBSON, the American singer-songwriter and actress, turns 40-years-old today. Gibson’s career in entertainment took of when, at just 17, she became the youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a number-one single – she entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 1988 for her song ‘Foolish Beat’. As well as being a record-breaking musician, Gibson has also appeared in a number of Broadway musicals, and a variety of independent films.

Despite recording the duet ‘Say Goodbye’ with JORDAN KNIGHT in 2006 – a song that peaked at number 24 in the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart – Gibson’s most prominent recent work amounts to co-starring with LORENZO LAMAS in the low-budget adventure film ‘Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus’. After the film’s trailer became an Internet sensation in 2009 – getting over one-million hits – the movie was officially released in May of the same year.

Following on from the success of ‘Megashark’, Gibson is set to appear in a forthcoming original movie entitled, ‘Mega Python vs Gatoroid’, which is due to be released in 2011. The film – which also stars American singer TIFFANY – will echo the action/sci-fi themes of ‘Megashark’.

Honestly, her music should've gotten much recognition like her recent movies...

Debbie Gibson turns 40, set to wrap up circus performances

Debbie Gibson, a former teen pop queen most famous in the 1980s, turned 40 on Tuesday and is about to wrap up a series of performances in the circus show Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy at a Connecticut hotel and casino.

Gibson plays Mother Nature and does not perform stunts. She recently made headlines when it was announced she and fellow 1980s pop icon Tiffany, 38, would star in the SyFy original film Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, which is set for release in 2011.

"Thank U 4 all the bday wishes!" Gibson Tweeted. "40 feels FABULOUS! I'm giggling cuz the number doesn't compute. I feel ETERNALLY ELECTRIC."

Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy, which features trapeze and high wire performers, jugglers and contortionists and which is based on a main Broadway production, wraps up its last show at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, CT on Wednesday.

"I am the singer slash narrator," Gibson told radio station Lite Rock 105. "I pretty much tie together the acts and the vignettes in this jungle theme through song. We were doing six shows a week and they jumped to eight shows because literally, lines have been out the door and around the casino. It's amazing."

Gibson, who also goes by her proper name - Deborah, rose to fame in the late 1980s with hit pop songs and ballads such as "Foolish Beat", "Out of the Blue" and "Lost in Your Eyes". She released eight studio albums, including a record made up of Broadway musical songs in 2003.

Micky Dolenz of the 1960s boy band The Monkees, which, like contemporary pop idols The Jonas Brothers, starred on television as well, has also joined the cast of Mega Python vs. Gatoroid.

Gibson also starred in the SyFy's Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus in 2009 with Lorenzo Lamas. In Mega Python vs. Gataroid, she plays an animal rights activist. Tiffany portrays a park ranger. She is best known for her 1987 rendition of the pop song "I Think We're Alone Now" and has starred in Syfy's Mega Piranha.

Check out a sneak peek of SyFy's Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, which features the two singers wrestling each other with a cake and inside water:
